Jason’s CFI diaries — Day 2

My luggage arrived late Tuesday night, finally a change of underpants!

Today I went on a road trip with 3 of the CFI campus organisers; Debbie Goddard, Dan Riley and Lauren Becker! We traveled for 8 hours from upstate New York, through Pennsylvania and into Maryland, which is just outside of DC. We talked for ages about anything and everything. Dan Riley and I are like twins, not only do we look a tiny bit alike, but we also are identical when it comes to our influences and opinions. We watched the latest episode of Family Guy together in the backseat on my laptop, the one where Brain comes out as an atheist. Check it out: ‘Season 11: Not All Dogs Go To Heaven.’ Also see CFI’s Derek Araujo’s recent blog on the relationship between Family Guy and secular humanism.

Lauren Becker and I also talked for quite a while. Those of you who listen to Point of Inquiry will know Lauren from the special comments she occasionally does on the show. One of her essays in particular on “Faith, Reason, Dawkins and J.R.R Tolkien” from back in 2006 was one of the most beautifully articulated arguments against critiques of Dawkins I had ever heard. I encourage you to have a listen to it, she spoke at the beginning just before the interview with Michelle Goldberg, author of Kingdom Coming (2006).

We arrived at the Hyatt Hotel at about 8:30pm. It is absolutely stunning, to say the least! They screwed up my room booking and had me in from Thursday instead of from Wednesday. So tonight for some reason they have put me in a massive luxurious suit with a king sized bed! And cable TV! The photos should speak for themselves (more on Flickr).

Tomorrow at 10am I am going on a tour of Washington D.C with a huge group from the conference. Expect an avalanche of photos.

Bye for now!
