Jason’s CFI diaries — Day 3

Today I officially felt like a tourist, hitting all the major hot spots around D.C. Our tour guide was awesome, had wore an ‘evolve fish’ hat (see below). I eventually got split off from the group and spent most of the day walking around with Sarah Kaiser and Eoban Binderd, who run the Secular Alliance at Indiana University. A red state for almost 40 years, Indiana helped to send Barack Obama to the white house in 2008. Sarah and her group are currently initiating their own atheist bus campaign using the slogan ‘You Can Be Good Without God’.

We saw the Capital Building, The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial and the Library of Congress.

This evening was the launch of the CFI World Congress at the Hyatt Hotel. The first event was a panel on ‘The Influence of Charles Darwin.’ On the panel was Barbara Forrest, a philosopher and author of Creationism’s Trojan Horse: The Wedge of Intelligent Design; Edward Tabash, a constitutional lawyer and Chair of the First Amendment Task Force for the Council for Secular Humanism; David Contosta, author of Rebel Giants a book which charts comparisons between the lives of Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln; and Michael Ruse, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science. Without question, Ruse’s presentation was the most controversial amongst the attendees. Two bloggers who are at the conference have already blogged about it, check out Larry Moran’s Sandwalk and Kristine Harley at Amused Muse. PZ Myers added his two cents as well.

Hey, say hello to Sean for me — the assistant to James Randi? Have a chat to him about Singapore and his trans-continental schooling, the two of you should have that in common. :)
