Great article Luke, wish I’d read it before I had replied to some anti-vaccine letter to the editor, along the same theme. Could have saved myself the 4hrs research.

I find it amusing that so many “skeptics” adopt a position of “knowledge”, ans so frequently make the make the logically fallacious assumption that because something has not been proved harmful, then it must be safe! Clearly a ridiculous proposition!
The position of truth is that ethyl mercury appears to be less harmful than methyl mercury. The conclusion that ethyl mercury is therefore safe, is a logical fallacy. The proponents of such claims are not true skeptics, but pseudo-skeptics.

A skeptic seeks proof before accepting knowledge. Mercury (both ethyl and methyl forms) are known to be harmful substances. It is right for people to be cautious, and skeptical of unfounded and frankly ridiculous claims of the safety of these demonstrably toxic substances.

Skepticism is about keeping an open and enquiring mind. It’s ironic that so many “skeptics” appear to be in the business of ridiculing those adopting a truly skeptical approach.

That’s not necessarily true (the fact that if there was something safer, they would use it). You only have to look at the harmful chemicals in personal care products– there is pleanty of other ingredients that they could use which would give the same results, but they use what they use because its cheaper.

What I dont get is the fact that some of these substances is actually banned overseas, and yet its “safe” here. Just because something is on the market does not make it safe. Look at all the pharmacutical drugs that have been taken off the market because it was too dangerous to your health. Those drugs at one stage was also considered “safe”.

And.…
The USA National Science Foundations Institute of Medicine recently stated that children vaccinated with thimerasol (ethyl-mercury) containing vaccines had a 2700% greater chance of developing autism than those vaccinated with vaccines not containing mercury.

So how does growing evidence like this not probe more questions to the safety of mercury in vaccinations?

If they could use something safer that was more effective they would. The levels of mercury in vaccines are NOT harmful.

Since when was ANY amount of mercury in our bodies considered safe?

Well, in vaccines it is considered safe. So I guess that proves you wrong…

Just because mercury is in other things doesnt make it any safer being in vaccinnations. Surely there is something else that they can use that is safer?

My bad on the injection method but do you go out and get a flu shot every year? Do you still get sick? My point is that getting the flu is mild in comparison to the medical side effects of vaccines which can become lifelong issues.
Yes is does “suck” to be the minority but you could say the same thing about those who die in plane, train, and auto accidents numbered in the hundreds of thousands, what about the malnourished people in third world countries who die by the hundreds of thousands either from starvation or disease, or the hundreds of thousands that die every year from AIDS.

All this happens in plain site and yet a couple thousand people die from the swine flu (most having underlying issues that have weakened the immune system) and we all freak out and jump to action, rushing in untested vaccines to give to our future: young children and pregnant mothers.

So you go ahead and worry about yourself being in the minority for swine flu and don’t let the big issues get in the way. It “sucks” to be you.

Flu vaccines are injected intramuscularly, not into the bloodstream.

And so what if the majority of flu sufferers get better? Sucks to be in the minority then!

All your research is good and sound but the main argument from anti-vac’s is not the necessarily the amount of mercury (thiomersal) in these vaccines, rather the way it is introduced into the body. Many of the medical problems you see today have always been around, all we have done is labeled and categorized these ailments.
That said, one cannot argue that we have seen an increasing number of people affected by blood and lymphatic disorders (lymphadenopathy, thrombocytopenia), nervous system disorders (convulsions, Guillain-Barre syndrome, or GBS, Bell’s palsy, and various neuropathies), respiratory ailments, immune system disorders, digestive disorders, and cardiovascular disorders, just to name a few that are rumored to be caused by vaccines.
Back to the method of how the majority of vaccinations are administered: Hypodermic needles.
What does that have to do when anything you might ask?
Your body naturally cleans out toxins and harmful things when digesting your food and breaking it down into something useful, that includes any mercury ridden fish you might happen to come across, as for coal dust or more accurately the by-product of its use which pollutes our planet still has to pass through the lungs (a fast healing, naturally cleaning organ).
What hypodermic needles do is introduce whatever being injected directly into the blood, completely by-passing all the body natural defenses and directly affecting ALL major organs or wherever your blood may flow in your body.

So yes these vaccines may contain very little mercury compared to what we have all been already exposed to but do we really need to add any more to our already polluted bodies for something that is meant to maintain our health not depreciate it. People die from the flu all the time how is H1N1 any different and the majority all get better, heck I have a better chance of drowning in my own bathtub the dying from the swine flu and I take showers.

The FDA and the drug companies selling these vaccines have admitted that they have not been thoroughly tested on adults and little to no testing for young children or pregnant mothers who are both to be considered high risk. Time to wake up and smell the stench of money hungry suits circling you in a desert of disinformation.
