It’s a Big Saline conspiracy!

Here’s something recent from those bastions of intellectual excellence over at the Australian Vaccination Network mailing list. (Spelling and grammar mistakes are quoted verbatim, they’re not mine. :)

My daughter was hospitalised when she was 5/6 years old for dehydration, they put a saline drip in her. Simone has never been vaccinated to my knowledge (I question this saline thing).
Prior to this she started preschool some 6 months before was able to read and recite the alphabet, knew which letters where which when asked and she’d point to them. She also knew the numbers on the clock and could replace them on a toy one. Was a happy reader (listening to me that is!).
Today she is now 11 and I am still struggling to work out what has happened. We have moved states and escaped Domestic Violence situation so I know that hasn’t helped.
Simone is not doing well at school, is in year 4 but should be year 6 according to the NSW (Aust) schooling system. Finally at the end of the year, her teacher has given her year 3 maths work.
I am astounded and well, disgusted. This is a Steiner school I’m talking about.
Could the “saline” in her drip when she was 5/6 caused her now learning difficulties and behaviour problems that have surfaced over the years? [Emphasis mine — Luke] I’m still waiting on my GP to get me a referral to see a paediatrian and I have no faith in them.
Anyone got any suggestions? We are in the Coffs Harbour area.
Thanks
Catherine
This woman actually seriously thinks that a saline IV is the cause of her daughter’s learning difficulties.
Not medicines, not vaccines, not thiomersal, but water which contains a tiny bit of salt to keep it close to isotonic with the blood plasma and bodily fluids.
“Can saline hurt you” is a question which basically maps onto “Does homeopathy really have an effect?”
Were there secretly vaccines added to the IV or something?
Of course, it’s plausible that saline could cause a kind of inverse placebo effect — just like apparent efficacy of homoeopathy due to the placebo effect, except in this case it’s a negative placebo effect — if you think it will hurt you, you might feel like it’s hurting you.
Of course, saline consists of deadly dihydrogen monoxide and mutagenic sodium chloride, so it’s not without its risks.
On a more serious note, what the hell is wrong with these people? Where is the basic science literacy?

My child can’t be stupid. My child can’t be handicapped. My child is perfect.

I feel for the child because of her learning difficulties, but also because of her ignorant mother.

maybe sending her to a Steiner school has something to do with it…

@Jono. My thoughts exactly.
Domestic violence. Unstable home life. Mother who does not believe in medical science. Steiner school.
Yes. Her condition is obvious post-saline onset syndrome.

If I’m not mistaken, the Steiner philosophy is to teach a bit of happy clapping and allow primary kids to find their own learning path. Which I interpret to mean, “pretend to do something spiritual whilst leaving the weak and lazy behind”. I think the mother’s scepticism might well be misplaced — as might her daughter.
Of course, it could also be someone having a laugh. It has Poe-like characteristics.

My question is, what was their reply?

Oh…My…Skyfairy.
That just tops all, that really does. I love how saline is in quotes, like it’s some mystical word she doesn’t really get.
Jeebus. I hope she doesn’t let her daughter swim at the beach either, because goodness only knows what being IMMERSED in saline is going to do to you!
