  1. Right - this looks like it's happening on the (admin edit) Friday (/admin edit) night of the convention! What we need to know is who is attending. There should be one of the 'Think Tank' sessions that the Skeptic Zone podcast are famous for as well!

    Richard Saunders
    Dr Rachael Dunlop
    Kylie Sturgess
    Eran Segev

...add your name! Venue to be announced - there's also the site at the Qld skeptics forum at http://tinyurl.com/yj7jnql - can someone repeat this thread on the JREF site for us all? :)

On the Saturday night? There's not already something happening that night?

    I'll be there regardless. :)

Uh, Kylie, this corresponds to the same time as the convention dinner... which I've already paid for... Will this take place after the dinner?

Being civil is almost as important as not calling yourself a Darwinist when debating creationists. Believe me.

I was wondering about that. I've paid for the dinner also.

Is there any reason that we can't hold the SitP prior (Thursday) and post (Sunday) convention?

Well, I'm not going to be in Brisbane until Friday morning, so I'd rather it not happen on the Thursday. I'm also catching a flight at 9pm on the Sunday night, so I don't think that time would work for me either. <.<

I'm screwed wither way, I think. Feel free to carry on without me...

  6. OOOPS! You're right - it's the Friday night!!

Thanks gang, will make sure that's changed. :)

  7. ANNOUNCEMENT - how about 9pm on Friday?

From 7.00 - 8.30pm is a special book launch on the Friday, but I shouldn't imagine it'd take a full hour to do that. Anyone know of a venue near the place that is suitable?

Friday is good for me. I'll see you all there, wherever it happens to be!

I'm good for Friday at 9 also.

I don't know the area so I'm not likely to be much help with the venue.

  10. Okay - ideas! After emailing the coordinator of the whole convention, she pointed out that the 'downstairs bar' is open from 8.30- 9pm... so at least half-an-hour (maybe we can hang around more after) is at our disposal.

In addition - since rumors of 'TAM Australia' are getting stronger, would people like to additionally contribute to a 'Guide to Australian slang' for overseas skeptics who may visit our country? Could be a fun project; I remember Elliot discussing the word 'bogan' in an interview and how well that went down. :)

Suggested list of words (add more!):
    Bogan
    Bludger
    Cactus
    Chunder
    Dero
    Feral
    Hoon
    Mongrel
    Ocker
    Root

and so forth. We could even compare NZ and Aust slang? :)

I can recommend the Regatta hotel on Coronation Drive.

  14. Re: stauros and Regatta hotel on Coronation Drive - how far is it from the venue? I'm not sure I'll have my own transport?

Just reiterating for anyone new - so far it seems to be 9pm on Friday?

From 7.00 - 8.30pm is a special book launch on the Friday (Aust Skeptics exclusive, Dr Martin Bridgstock's book), but I shouldn't imagine it'd take a full hour to do that.

There is a bar / venue on campus, which will be open from about 5.30-10pm... we could probably go there?

    Ewww, Regatta.

I'm biased but I'd rather go anywhere but the Regatta. :-P Ship Inn, Southbank is easy to access and is nice. Next to Griffith Uni/College of Arts.

Then there's a heap of pubs near or on Queen St Mall...

    Hey all,

    Kylie asked me to pass this on;

Turns out the bar downstairs from the book signing closes at 9pm.

The book signing is happening in the Kathleen Room, upstairs at the University of Queensland Club.

The plan is to meet at the downstairs bar from 8pm, maybe get in a Think Tank and see what happens from there. While this is overlapping the book signing there's nothing to say people can't do both.

Given that we now have contradictory times (downstairs bar opening/open/closing at or around 9pm) could someone contact the bar and verify? This may determine if we need to arrange a location to move on to or not. If we do need to move on, we should figure out where we're going for those that can't make it before 9pm.

I'll be there wherever it's at - I agree with Purplefae, don't recommend the Regatta, especially on a friday nite.

Friday night after the book signing gets a rogering A-OKed thumbs-up for me.

There will of course be an auxiliary #pissup on Sunday night for locals and next-day-leavers.

  20. Whoo hoo! Just discovered that it is Skeptic Zone host Richard Saunders' birthday on the Saturday!!

That'll be the night of the dinner, of course. But will bring something for him to nom - remember to wish him a happy 21st birthday on the day! :D

Kylie, you didn't know when Richard's birthday was? Shame on you, shame on you... ;p

  22. Well, I knew it was SOON, because Dr Rachie just had hers? Just wasn't sure if it was during or after the event. :)

The Regatta is quite noisy and v. busy, but for some reason the people at work like it for after work drinks on a Friday. The RE is worth a miss unless a trip to Emergency is on your to do list.

Any consensus on location for a drink or two? There is a distinct lack of pubs around St Lucia. The 2nd Degree at the UQ Union would be an option, but is closed from 6pm for a private function this Friday. Drat!

The Hundred Acre Bar at the St Lucia golf course says open till late, but it might be a bit on the expensive side. It is quite close to the Uni though (get a #411 or #428 bus to Gailey Rd and walk down the hill). http://www.hillstonestlucia.com.au/hab-hours.html

I just called The 2nd Degree too - only to find out about the private function. There really is a strange lack of pubs in the St Lucia area.

Never been to the Hundred Acre, but it could be a possibility. Either that or one of the many places in town. There is always the probability of loosing people on the way though.

  25. "Any consensus on location for a drink or two?"

Yes. It is: Kathleen Room, Uni Qld., 8pm onwards.

Looks like the only commitment that I've been able to get from the beginning is this one:
"The book signing is happening in the Kathleen Room, upstairs at the University of Queensland Club. The plan is to meet at the downstairs bar from 8pm, maybe get in a Think Tank and see what happens from there. While this is overlapping the book signing there's nothing to say people can't do both."

If people are wanting to do something AFTER the 9pm (possible close time) is up to other people. But for the purposes of recording the Skeptic Zone Think-Tank, that's the best I've been able to get in terms of agreement, after posting this two weeks ago?

If people are planning on going some distance from the Uni, will be difficult for us out-of-towners without transportation. So, officially it's the Kathleen Room and see you there. :)
